Icons in Jewellery: Princess Diana

Known for her amazing fashion sense and dedicated humanitarian work, the late Princess Diana also enjoyed an impressive and iconic jewellery collection. It’s now being passed onto the new generation of royals. In her letter of wishes, the Princess wrote: “I would like you to allocate all my jewellery to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewellery to your discretion.”

Royal analysts now hope that with the marriage of Harry and Meaghan, we will be able to see more of her famous pieces out in the public.

Here are some of Princess Diana’s more famous items, and where we have seen them since.

Asprey ring

The aquamarine ring on Princess Diana is known as the Asprey ring, which was made by the British jewellery house in 1997. It is said that Diana commissioned the emerald-cut aquamarine ring to be made after her divorce with Charles.

Since then, Prince Harry has gifted the Asprey ring to his wife Meghan Markle. She was spotted wearing it at the reception party after their wedding. Meghan had reportedly chosen to wear it to honour Diana.

Engagement ring

One of the most important engagement rings in the world, Princess Diana’s engagement ring is now valued at £300,000. The ring is a 12 carat oval blue Ceylong sapphire, with a halo of 14 diamonds, and was given to the princess in 1981 by Prince Charles.

The ring was, at first, owned by Prince Harry, who chose the keep the memento after his mother’s passing in 1997. However, when realising that Prince William was preparing to propose to Kate Middleton in 2010, Harry offered the ring to his older brother, and it now rests on Kate’s hand.

Lover’s knot tiara

The Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara is one of Princess Diana’s most iconic jewellery pieces. Also called the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot Tiara, Princess Diana received it as a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II in 1981. It is over 100 years old, and has 19 diamond arches. It is in fact a replica of an earlier tiara, which is thought to be held in an unknown private location.

Kate is a frequent wearer of the Lover’s Knot tiara, having worn it at least four times.

Butterfly earrings and sapphire bangle

After announcing her pregnancy, the Duchess of Sussex was spotted wearing a pair of butterfly earrings that eagle-eyed commentators noticed previously belonged to Princess Diana.

Meghan Markle wore the butterfly earrings multiple times on her trips across Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga.

In the picture, Meghan is also wearing Diana’s gold and sapphire bangle, a bracelet made from 18 ct yellow gold with a deep blue sapphire at the end. The Princess had worn it at more casual events in the 90s.
