A risqué, comic tale of a woman’s fight for freedom and absolution from Daniel Defoe. Moll Flanders, born destitute in Newgate prison, must struggle to form a place for herself in 18th century London. Defoe’s heroine faces prostitution, bigamy and finds success as a thief, before being transported to the New World. Told from Moll’s point of view, this colourful story depicts the female experience in a sordid world, but refuses to render the resourceful Moll as a victim. Defoe articulates all the nuances and contradictions of self-determination in English society with humorous flair and insight, and is considered by many to be the first true novelist, and arguably an early feminist. This copy was published by The Folio Society in 1965 and comes with its original case.
