A prophetic story about maddening bureaucracy and the totalitarian state. Published posthumously in 1925, Kafka tells us of Joseph K.’s arrest and trial, for a crime never revealed to him or the reader. As one of Kafka’s best-known works, this novel details Herr K.’s mental collapse when faced with a sinister, pernicious governmental authority. It also reflects the rise of oppression and authoritarianism in Europe when Kafka wrote the novel, in 1914. He explores themes of guilt, moral obligation and personal freedom, which is unsurprising given that he cited Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov as his inspiration. The Trial was the first of Kafka’s books to be published by Penguin, and this copy is from 1971.
